Surviving your first day at work...

Mr. Big Guy still remembers the first time reporting for duty. It was aeon years since Mr. Big Guy had that butterflies fluttering in the tummy, the sweaty palms and the irregular heartbeats. Mr. Big Guy understands that some of you might have a hard time adjusting to a new working environment so Mr. Big Guy did some research on how to survive your first day at work. Here are some tips to help you win friends, disarm foes and keeping yourself on the positive career track:

1. Be on time! Come in early and stay a little later.

2. Dress appropriately. Do not dress to kill as you might not want to intimidate your fellow colleagues on your first day of work. Looking smart, clean & tidy should do the trick. Remember, people are watching…

3. Be confident but not overpowering. You do not want people to think you are arrogant.

4. Be polite and friendly. Greet everyone with firm handshakes and your best smile. Try your best to remember the names and positions of your new colleagues. Most importantly, be humble.

5. Bring a notebook! Write down anything that is important, such as your colleagues’ name and other important work details.

6. Do not be afraid to ask questions. If you don’t understand something, ask for clarifications. Although there is no such thing as stupid questions, please ask sensible questions.

7. Zip up and listen. Listen to instructions in full in order to do your job right the first time. Zip up so that you can work more effectively.

8. Show positive attitude and team spirit.

9. Always take initiative and be proactive. Don’t just sit and wait for people to give you instructions.

10. Avoid office politics and gossips.

Being a newbie to a big organization is not easy. Although it is challenging, however it is exciting. Don’t worry if you don’t leave a perfect impression on your first day of work, no one is perfect anyway. Just relax and keep an open mind. Remember this; making a lasting impression and reputation is your ultimate goal.
